Are you a multifamily property owner looking for new ways to lower your water and energy use and delight your residents?
Referred to as Structural Waste, every building has its unique architecture behind the walls which dictates the amount of cold water that must be purged through its pipes before the hot water makes its way to the shower head or tub spout.
The research shows that bathers will continue to be away from their shower 1 minute on average after the hot water has arrived, due to multi tasking. This equates to 2–6 gallons of hot water wasted every shower (depending on flow rate). One can imagine with distracted teens how this could be much much more...
Research shows 75% of users walk away after turning on their shower to do something else; most often not returning until that task(s) is complete, wasting up to 25% of the hot water uses for entire bathing process. read the report
Did you know that the speed at which the cold water purges during warm up affects the total gallons lost? For example, a low flow showerhead increases the structural waste (water & energy) by as much as 50%.
As the hot water is summoned from the water heater and begins its journey to to the bathroom, it must of course first push the cold water out. The slower it travels, the more time it has to overtake and mix with this cold water, producing additional gallons of luke warm water that is not yet acceptable to the bather and therefore wasted. Now, for stand alone showers (no tub), the benefits of low flow showerheads greatly outweigh this warm water mix loss but what if there was a way for tub/shower combo units to significantly reduce this plus save much, much more? And do it all automatically without asking the user to change their behavior?
The Tub Spout Solution?: One therefore may conclude that the quicker the water can be purged, such as through the tub spout which flows at 5 gallons per minute, the less total gallons lost. Of course, the catch here is that the user must be accustomed to this behavior and, more importantly, be standing nearby ready to hop in as soon as the hot water arrives in order to not waste Hot Water(water & energy) at 5 gallons per minute! Since most bathers consistantly walk away while their shower/bath are warming up this method is a gamble at best.
Evolve's Auto-Diverting Tub Spout System does just that. For tub/shower combinations, as soon as the water reaches 95°, the intelligent system stops the flow out the tub spout, preventing Hot Water (both water & energy) from being wasted while no one is present. What happens next is the shower head will begin to trickle, letting the user know its warm and waiting. That's it!
With Showerstart Technology, the user decides when to return and begin bathing (typically when they finish their task at hand such as picking out clothes, using the toilet, shaving, etc). The water in the pipes remains warm (the trickle will allow for any additional cooled water to escape) and the user simply activates the shower head to begin normal flow at the rate the shower head is intended – no further flow restriction occurs. If a bath is preferred, simply activate the tub spout instead. The system will automatically reset itself for the next user. how it works graphic
Elimination of Behavioral Waste for stand alone showers, as well as reduction in Structural Waste for bathers with Tub/Shower combinations can be achieved with Evolve's ShowerStart Technology.
